|REconomy:|N Agriculture and stockraising are traditionally the most important industries, but since World War II an extensive manufacturing has been set up based on the rich mineral resources. Tajikistan have coal, oil, natural gas, uranium, lead, zinc and rich resources of hydroelectric power.
Most important crops are barley, cotton, wheat and vegetables.
There is an extensive silk and textile industry as well as machinetool manufacturing and many chemical plants.
|RHistory:|N There are traces of settlements in the area from 3000 BC. Since then Tajikistan has been invaded and conquered by Iranian, Arabs - who made the population convert to Islam, Mongoles, Uzbeks, Afghanistans and Russians.
In 1924 a Tajikistan region was founded within the Uzbekian Sovjet Republic. This region was in 1929 transformed into the Tajikistan SSR, an autonomous republic within the Sovjet Union.
On September 9, 1991 the independent republic of Tajikistan was proclaimed and it was internationally recognized when the Sovjet Union was dissolved December 25 1991.
In Tajikistan the communist party has managed to keep powers, but in 1992 there were demonstrations against the communists organized by the opposition and by Islamic fundamentalists.
